What is the ACT Test?
· The ACT test measures a student’s capability to complete college-level work. Scores are used for determining college admission, as a tool in judging scholarship awards, and placement in college level classes.
· The ACT test consists of four multiple-choice tests covering four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. The optional Writing Test measures skill in planning and writing a short essay. Scores in each of the subtests correspond to skills in entry-level college courses in English, algebra, social science, humanities, and biology.
What will my score look like?
· ACT Composite scores range from 1 to 36. The 2017 national average was 20.8. The Composite score is derived from an average of the English, Math, Reading and Science subtests. The optional Writing Test is not used for this average and is a relatively new part of the test.
How long does the test take and when it is administered?
· The ACT includes 215 multiple-choice questions and takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete, including a short break (or just over four hours if you are taking the ACT Plus Writing). Actual testing time is 2 hours and 55 minutes (plus 30 minutes if you are taking the ACT Plus Writing).
Why should I take the ACT more than once?
· The test is timed and the testing situation is extremely regimented. Taking the test over after taking higher level math/science classes will allow you to retake the test without the stress of “first time jitters.”
What do I take with me to the test?
Calculator (one with which you are familiar), at least two pencils (NOT mechanical pencils), a snack for the break, a bottle of water (also for the break).

You must register yourself at www.actstudent.org.
Where is the ACT Test given?
· The ACT test is given at numerous sites all over the United States. If there is enough interest, Sparta can be picked up as one of the test sites. Students pick their test site when registering. It is held at 8:00 on a Saturday morning.
Rumors…It’s just a rumor…
I’ve heard that…
· The test is free the first time you take it…NOT TRUE!!! Students on Free or Reduced lunches can take the ACT twice during high school at no cost. Everyone else pays the fee.
· You can take the ACT as many times as you want…NOT TRUE!!! You can only take the ACT twelve times.
· You have to take the ACT to go to college…NOT ENTIRELY TRUE. Check with your college to see if they require the test. Most schools accept ACT or SAT, although ACT is much more widely used in this area. BEWARE: If you plan on going into nursing, but plan to start at a two-year school, you WILL have to take the ACT to get into the nursing program so you might as well take it in high school!
· You can have extra time if you have an IEP…POSSIBLY, however, you must apply for extended time and get approval before test day.
