Inclement WeatherINCLEMENT WEATHER INFORMATION

Dear Sparta School District Families:

Winter weather in Missouri can often be challenging to predict. When considering canceling school due to inclement weather, the top priority is the safety of our students, staff, and families. Everyone’s health and well-being drive these difficult decisions.  

Regardless of what type of inclement weather decisions are made, there will be both support and opposition. I know these decisions will not always please everyone, but I want to share how these decisions are made.

When extreme weather is imminent, the Sparta School District is actively investigating and monitoring the precipitation, temperature, wind chill, road conditions, and more. Additionally, I stay in contact with the superintendents of our neighboring districts, and we get information from the National Weather Service, our bus drivers, and other sources to ensure I have the most comprehensive information available to inform my decision. This includes our administrators driving through the community to assess road conditions.

Calling off school for inclement weather has an effect on our entire community. Not only does it affect our students, faculty, and staff, but it also impacts our parents and family members who often work regardless of the weather. We understand that any decision will have opposition, but please know that these decisions are made with the best information available as well as the best interest of our students in mind. I encourage you to have a plan for your student in the event of a school cancellation or early dismissal.

Finally, regarding the timing of the decision, it is my goal is to make a decision about the next day prior to the 10:00 PM news, but that is rarely practical. Weather conditions can change rapidly, for better or worse, overnight. An announcement about cancellations is made as early as possible and will occur no later than 6:00 AM. Cancellations will be announced on local television stations, 94.7 KTTS, as well as through our student information notification system.
